DEKRA knows that Innovation is more than Ideation

At DEKRA, a global inspection company with approximately 40,000 employees, innovation is at the top of the agenda for the company’s 100th birthday in 2025.

Innovation is more than Ideation

With a global competition that is ever increasing and new technologies and business models that reshape market after market, the demand for innovation is growing. Idea management solutions have become more mainstream, as corporate innovation initiatives are embracing idea crowdsourcing, open innovation, design thinking initiatives, ideation hackathons, etc. While businesses are increasingly using ideation tools, there is also an evolving need to combine ideation and idea management systems with other front-end of innovation activities such as problem identification, user needs analysis, business intelligence, future trends and scenarios.

At DEKRA, a global inspection company with approximately 40,000 employees, innovation is at the top of the agenda for the company’s 100th birthday in 2025. But, as Jörgen Backersgård, Director Business Innovation MTI, a part of DEKRA providing Industrial Inspections, points out – working with innovation is not just about ideas.

"We welcome participation in capturing and developing ideas – but we also realize that the best ideas should be based on unsolved problems and high impact future trends. With Co:tunity we combine these activities, in a truly collaborative environment, under the same domain"

Jörgen Backersgård, Director Business Innovation MTI

DEKRA's platform for Collaborative Innovation has three focus areas:

  • Identify unsolved problems
  • Spot and analyze trends
  • Create and develop ideas

With a lot of employees working with inspections for our customers out in the field DEKRA needed to make it super easy and playful to share experiences and find solutions. Through an easy accessible mobile and web interface employee can take photos, videos and add some text to report problems. The groups Innovation Ambassadors, with support of the built-in AI mechanisms, can then cluster problems to new or existing needs, for further analysis and handling.

With the company’s 100th birthday around the corner (in 2025) the timing is perfect for DEKRA to focus on the future and how to shape the next 100 years. Everyone is invited to constantly watch and spot trends. Changes in the surroundings impact DEKRA’s customers, suppliers, employees, and naturally even own business and operations. Trends and Scenarios are also used to inspire and validate new Ideas.

Finally, everyone is included in the Idea Management process. DEKRA’s Innovation Contributors can take ideas from early drafts to proof of concepts or new businesses, through four stages. In stage one participants draft, publish, vote and comment on ideas. To be approved for stage two, the idea creator also need to fill in answers on six project charter questions. In stage two, the idea creator can build a team by adding other directly participants or accepting applications from other participants who wish to join. Once the team is in place, the idea proceeds to stage three for detailed description, business model canvasing and budgeting. In stage four, the team can define, allocate and take actions on jobs to be done through Activity Kanban’s and Gantt chart visualizations.
